November 17, 2019

Hello everyone! My name is Darya, and here at my channel I speak about my horses, my work with them and about different things related to horses. So, today, I’m answering your questions,
our dear viewers, the ones you’ve asked in comments and in messages. I consider one of the questions to be worthy of a special talk, and this queston is
about the order of tasks when teaching a horse useful skills
from its earliest days. That is, what to begin with, what to teach at what age, and how these tasks should follow each other. Actually, we’ve filmed quite a few
videos about it, but they are divided into separate lessons, separate classes. Today, I’d like to talk about how to put all these lessons in a system, and in what order and what exactly we should teach a horse,
beginning with the youngest foal, which has just been born and starts being interested in the world around it, and ending with the mature horse which is ready to be mounted and
actually has already been mounted. That’s what we’re going to talk about today. Now we’ll follow the herd which has gone to graze and find a foal, and taking it as an example, I will show and tell you some things. Of course, I’ll speak more. And horses are necessary to give
brighter examples to the issues discussed. Well, let’s follow the herd! When a foal is new-born and you want it to be sociable and tame, the first thing to begin with is to teach it to be touched everywhere, to be cleaned, stroked, to give its legs for inspection. This can be done not only it a stable, but also in a field, and a foal should react well to this. Here! Good boy! The foal should give you not only front legs, but hinder legs as well. This can be done, literally, since the foal’s birth. It doesn’t require any equipment,
like teaching a foal to obey reins, or teaching any other useful skills. Though, it is a useful skill to react to people’s orders without objections. That is, the first thing to do with a young foal is to teach it not to run away from us, to bear our touches, to give us its legs, to be near us, not to advance on us, to keep away from our personal space, because now a foal is small, but it is
growing rapidly and becoming bigger and bigger, and soon its weight
will be bigger than ours. A foal should learn to yield,
that is when you are moving it, it has to yield to you. This is easy to be done with young foals, because they still weigh little, and it is easy
for you to move them and explain what they have to do. These are the things you should do with your young foal, literally, since its birth. Though, you don’t have to put any harness on it to do so, a foal can go without harness until it is 6 months old. You don’t have to do it if a foal follows the mother. But, if you want to do something with this foal, then yes, you have to teach it to wear harness. We have made several videos about
how to teach a foal to wear harness. You can watch them. just starting with a two-months-old foal and until the period of separating a foal from the mother,
that is when it is 6 months old, or even a little older. This is the first thing to start teaching your foal. But, do nothing like stunts! For example, I’m often asked how to teach a foal to rear up, or, how to teach a “trapeze”, or, how to teach a foal to climb
a stand, or do other stunts. You shouldn’t do this. Never do this! Don’t teach a foal bad things! It’s bad for the foal’s growing body, because its bones are still very soft. So, when a foal gets the wrong exercise, its tendons may suffer. These are things attached to the ends of bones
inside joints. And a foal may become disabled as a result of this. That’s why, let a foal grow, but teach it only those things which are essential for everyday
care of this young horse. For example, if, God forbids, an accident happens, a foal should let you treat it, hold it, let you touch it and anoint any part of its body. This is what is important for young foals. Then, foals just grow. We don’t usually teach foals from
6 months to 1 year of age. They just grow, wlak, graze and get older. Of course, they’ve already learnt
the harness and the halter, they know how to put it on, but that’s all! They cannot do anything else. They can also take injections,
you should teach them to do it, so that you can easily take foal’s skin
and poke your finger in it, like this, for instance. I’m taking its skin, poking my finger
in it, but it doesn’t bother. You should teach your foal such things, too, so that later you can easily administer injections, vaccinate it, draw blood samples. Teach it that you can touch its throat. And it is not scarry for the foal. It should be done by all means. When a foal has grown up till it’s 1 year, then you should start teaching it useful skills. Teach it halter-breaking. What is it? It is teaching a young horse to obey orders. It is the second stage of teaching. We do it with the help of reins. We put a roller on a horse – it’s a kind of saddle, it is put here on the back and fastened
with a girth, there are rings on it, through which reins go and get attached to the rings on a snaffle or on a halter. And we start to gradually teach a horse different orders like “Stop!”, “Stand still!” and “Go!” We also teach a horse to turn, that is to yield to the pressure of the reins. We don’t do it often or intensively, just about once or twice while the horses are 1-1,5 years old. And after that, we start training
a horse for a sleigh, if it is physically fit enough for this. In winter, when there’s plenty of snow, we train a young horse in harness. What does it look like? We teach a horse to put on
a collalr, a breeching, a saddle, to tighten the girth, to take bit, that is to take a snaffle, to put on a bridle. Before that, a horse knows reins, knows some orders (“Stop!”, “Go!”, turns, reins back, stops). Then we put a horse into a light sledge
and move it in a sledge. if a horse does it well, understands
what it has to do, and it is not afraid of it, it means a horse has learnt it well, and
we don’t bother it until next summer. That is, we don’t do anything with it again. You can do something with your horse in-hand, horses learn very quickly. And if they’ve learnt something, they
will remember it for a long time. And now we’ll go to the yearlings’ herd
and there we’ll speak of what to teach your horse then. This foal here has just turned one year old. Of course, at this age, as I have already said, you should put any strain on a young horse. You can only teach it wearing a halter to do some things like “Go next to me”,
“Stop”, “Turn after me”, “Yield to my pressure”. These are the things you do with your young horse, you teach it useful skills. And that’s all! And later, when a horse is two years old, we’ll see how well it is formed. Now, we’ll come up to one more horse, which is two years old now. It hasn’t been mounted or harnessed, because it has a big workload of a studhorse. Yes, it is so young, but, as we can see from experience, it can give foalcrop, and it’s the only thing we want it do at present. This stallion is 2, it is of trotter type,
it is a rather small boy, not so large, and I don’t train such a young horse to be mounted, because I consider it too young for this. It needs to grow up and to form completely, the workload it has now is, as I’d say, rather a lot for it and for its young and immature body. We’ll mount this horse when it is 3 or older, and train it for a sledge when it is 2,5 or older. I don’t fancy mounting such small
horses when they are 2 years old. And this mare here is 3,5. It is quite well-formed, we mounted this horse last year, when it was 2,5 years old. It has learnt its lessons well. But right now it is having some rest, we don’t work on it, because, I think, that after training, it needs to grow a little and to become more mature. Its joints must get firm, and now they are big, but rather weak. So, if we give a lot of work to this horse now, it can damage its joints. That is why now it just walks and grows up. I’d like to make this kind of summary:
I believe, and it’s my personal opinion, based on the experience of horses I work with, which are born and grow up on my farm, and which we work with – until a foal is
6 months old, you should just teach it to see a person as a part of its world and let a person do all kinds of things to itself. Before it is one year old, a foal must know reins, it must walk next to a person, stop on the order, start walking on the order, it mustn’t struggle out, or rear up, or kick back on a person, it must be trained to behave well, all this should be done
before a foal turns 1 year old. When a horse is 1-1,5 years old, it is trained in reins. We teach a young horse in reins,
when a person walks behind or at the horse’s side, to listen to voice orders, it is too early to put a foal on a lunge at this age, reins are not a lunge. In reins, a horse moves straight forward, it doesn’t bend, it doesn’t lower its shoulder. A young horse must move
straight forward, it mustn’t lower or cross front or hinder legs – it’s bad for its locomotor system. Never put a foal on a lunge when
it’s too young. It’s very bad for it. When a horse is 1,5-2 years old,
we do the first harnessing. Not mounting, but harnessing! A horse is harnessed and put in a sledge. Why a sledge? Because it is an easier workload for a horse, a sledge moves easily on the snow, it is light and don’t make
as much noise as a cart, for instance, or a carriage, and it is easy for a horse to move it. A sledge can be very light or rather heavy, depending on abilities and type of a horse in training. We train a young horse in a sledge at this age and then stop training it until it is 2-2,5 years old. When a horse is 2-2,5 years old, it must have already learnt a bridle, a roller,
reins, must move well in reins, it must move well next to a person, it must know a saddle, a rug, a namnah,
all the things that are put on its back, tightening the girth. A horse must know it all. When a horse is 2-2,5 years old, depending on its size and its abilities, a horse is mounted. Mounted – doesn’t mean “working on a mounted horse”! A trainer starts mounting a horse,
and this kind of training of a horse under a trainer goes on from
when a horse is 2 years old till it is 3 years old. We don’t gallop a mounted horse until it is 3 years old. We start galloping a young horse
only after it is 3 years old. Why? Because gallop is a big strain for horse’s sinews and tendons, which are not firm enough yet and are not well-formed for this heavy workload. That is, first, a horse must be completely formed, and second, it must be ballanced under its own weight and take a rider, and get ballanced under a rider, so that it can feel rider’s weight and take it on its back correctly. This is what’s so important. When a horse is 3 years old, you can
start working on it, both in harness and mounted. This is the conclusion I have come to
during the years that I train bring up and grow horses, and I believe this training and up-bringing from the very early age and till the start of horse’s work lets us to get a horse which is healthy both physically and mentally. All this time our horses move quite a lot, they do it in a group, they grow up in a herd, so, they become socially adapted
and can communicate within a group, they can also communicate with a person. It is very good and very correct. That is what I wanted to say today, and here, i think, we’ll stop our talk on what stages and steps of training and up-bringing of a horse there should be, as I see them. I’ve expressed my opinion, it can be different from yours, or from general opinion. But still, it’s mine. That’s it. Best of luck to you! Watch our channel. Subscribe. Like our videos. 8.
