LET’S SHOW YOU HOW THIS HAPPENED THIS IS VIDEO GIVEN TO US BY DANIEL BARCENAS, THIS HAPPENED DURING THE RACE NUMBER FOUR TODAY. THE HORSES WERE RUNNING FROM GAS TO DIRT AROUND A CORNER AROUND THE TRACK WHEN THE HORSE WENT DOWN AND A SECOND ANIMAL WAS RIGHT BEHIND AND AS A RESULT COULDN’T AVOID THE FALLEN HORSE, SO HE TRIPPED. HE MANAGED TO GET BACK UP AND IS DOING FINE BUT ARMS RUNNER HAD TO BE PUT DOWN TODAY. NOW YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT SANTA ANA REOPENED ON FRIDAY AFTER NEARLY A MONTH-LONG CLOSURE FOR OFFICIALS TO IMPLEMENT NEW REGULATIONS AND INSPECT THE TRACK. THE ONE HORSE WAS LEADING, THE BIG FAVORITE, AND THEN THEY HIT THE DIRT AND WHEN THEY HIT THE DIRT I SAW THE GREY HORSE AND ANOTHER HORSE GO DOWN. ALL OF A SUDDEN WE SAW HORSES GO DOWN, AND WITH WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON IT’S KIND OF SAD TO THINK HE COULDN’T EVEN FOCUS ON THE REST OF IT BUT IT TOOK A WHILE AND ESPECIALLY THE KIDS THEY WERE REALLY UPSET SEEING WHAT WAS GOING ON. AND OUR CAMERA WAS HERE DURING RACE NUMBER 8 TODAY TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE WERE ABLE TO CAPTURE ON VIDEO. YOU CAN SEE THAT ONE OF THE JOCKEYS FELL OFF HIS HORSE. SANTA ANA SAYS HE IS OKAY TONIGHT AND THE GROUP PETA SENT OUT A STATEMENT SAYING THAT IT CALLS ON GOVERNOR NEWSOM TO FORM AN INDEPENDENT PANEL TO INVESTIGATE THE TRAINING AND VETERINARY PRACTICES IN CALIFORNIA RACING AND IF THE DOES NOT TAKE EVERY POSSIBLE ACTION TO PROTECT THE HORSES, THEN RACING SHOULD ALLOWED TO CONTINUE. NOW WE’RE TOLD THAT THE NEXT RACE DAY HERE AT SANTA ANA IS ON THURSDAY AND FOR NOW, THE TRACK TELLS US THAT THAT WILL GO ON AS SCHEDULED.

  1. Time to shut down that historic race track 🏆 let all the Asians 👩🏻in Arcadia build some Mansions there instead🏡

  2. shut it down now! this sport is a very selfish sport! ive been a trainer of these ottb horses for a very long time, and try to do my part in helping rehab these horses to get a new home w/ ppl who love these beautiful graceful animals! my thumbnail is one of those horses that i had for 16yrs and she lived the rest of her life w/ me on my farm and I miss her dearly!

  3. SHUT IT DOWN!!! How many more horses have to die??!!! Karma is coming to all involved in this animal cruelty. Something is obviously wrong with this track and race.

  4. This was a case of the turf to dirt switch that confuses the horses into thinking they need to jump which is very dangerous , Santa Anita should never run another race on this hillside course, they should also change the dirt track to a high quality all weather synthetic surface like Golden Gate or Woodbine which has better drainage and is more consistent , those two tracks seem to be more safe for the horses.

  5. This track needs a more thorough investigation or needs to be shut down. PETA needs to stay out of it though. That organization is a joke and kills more animals than it helps.

  6. I have cursed the owner of that Santa Anita RaceTrac he will die soon his ignorance has caused this he will die of a heart attack curse his soul for all eternity the soul of the Fours has paid for his life and you will pay your soul may you burn in hell and so would occurs upon the Santa Anita race track and all those who worship track show see upon the rap of death

  7. It's all about the money, owners, trainer's, breeders, they don't care about the horses, they never did, only the ones that make them money do they love, the slow horses go to the slaughter house, is that love, a 3 day ride, no stopping for food or water, packed like sardines in a truck, greedy owners won't even spend a dime for a last meal, oh well there going to die anyways, right, you bunch of pigs ,horses that made tons of money even they end up in a slaughter house, like Ferdinand, every time you bet a horse race your supporting this cruel sport, they hear the shots, they smell the blood, and they shake with fear, they ask themselves what did l do so wrong to lose my life like this, some owners won't even spend the price for a bullet, so the unlucky horses are knifed to death, you good people bet on something else, cads,or other sports, save are friends they all tryed so hard they did what was asked of them, but some of them just couldn't run fast.

  8. Thank God Hollywood park, bay meadows, tanforan are gone for good, l hope the rest of them go under as well. Find other ways to spend your money, do we really need to have this sick sport around any longer.

  9. PeTA is not the horse experts, PeTA is salivating at these tragedies as they kill all animals they touch. The PeTA mission statement is extinction.

  10. 1. ALL US TRACK MUST have the best surfaces, 75% the same for horses if we are to be making $ off them. These crazy surfaces all different is weird. Drainage must be improved.

    2. RIDERS Licenes, RULES, in our country SAME or close to it.

    3. STRICT Rules re: ANY and ALL uses of Med , dates included. Medical Durantion limits on All meds.

    4. IF HORSES BLEED – TIME OFF IN PASTURE WITHOUT HESITATION OR QUESTIONS. THIS PASTURE/STALL REST MUST BE CHECKED and agreed to by 3 persons munium DAILY . We humans get second & 3 0pinions by Doc's so why not or beloved horses? )I Hate too many rules BUT WE MUST CREATE SAFTY FIRST. A GOVERNING BODY IS IMPORTANT. LIFETIME KICKOUTS FOR ANY OFFICIAL TAKING PAY OFFS.

    5. NO "FREELANCING" OWNERS DOING THE OWN THING.

    6. A registry of all meds used for every race.

    7. Registery for "BLEEDER" HORSES & All
horses that have been whipped & panicd

    Requezgrycor horsesneed more suppurt
    8. I personally must take water pills as My Doctors request i do. Water pills are Tricky to use.
They very HARD ON KIDNEYS & HEART, plus they LEAVE A PERSON VERY TIRED. it takes me 3 days to recover from them… If horses race T 3 yrs old Would it help the problem ?

    MORE TO COME

    8. LOOK AT FREAK SHOW BODY BUILDERS THAT USE WATER PILLS LOTS with veins popping out & pimples on the fake tanned bodies. Won't Work.

. All tracks CHANGED to "all weather" 80% sand 20% silk fibers

    2. No racing of any 2yr olds. Skinny complex ankle Bones MUST BE ABLE TO HOLD UP UNDER HUGE WEIGHTS OF HORSES FRONT END. Bones get stronger at 3 yrs old. Babies/Foals must not be forced to run .

    3. HORSES ARE TERRIFIED OF BEING WHIPPED. THE WHITES OF THEIR EYES SHOW IN PANIC & THEY RUN WIDE TO GET AWAY FROM BEING WHIPPED. SHADOW ROLL ARE USED FOR HORSES TO NOT JUMP SHADOW OF POLES WHICH LOOK DITCHES OR SNAKES OR HORSE CAN NOT TRUST WHAT THE DARK SPOT IS. MY HORSE REFUSED TO CROSS THE STREET CAUSE HE STEPPED ON A MANHOLE COVER & THE SOUND WAS HOLLOW. MY BIG GERMAN SHEPHERD WOULD PANIC ON STAIRS CAUSE HIS DEPTH PERCEPTION WAS OFF. HE WOULD JUST FTEEZE & GO DOWN SHAKING. IT TAKES A HORSE A LONG TIME TO TRUST NEW STUFF. I BEG YOU RIDERS TO STOP WHIPPING/HURTING BABIES.

WHIP ONLY USED TO GUIDE HORSE OR IN EXTREME CASES TO PTEVENT COLLISIONS. No regular use of WHIPS. NO CRACKING WHIPS. NO HEAVY THICK HARD WHIPS THAT LOOK LIKE THE HORSE IS BEING WHIPPED IN THEIR SENITIVE SIDES WITH HANDLET

  11. i stop watching horse racing since 2006 Preakness Stakes when Barbaro shattered his leg which ended his racing career and eventually led to his death. The Greatest Horse ever

  12. The tremendous trend of narrow bloodlines is more or less inbreeding. These horses are simply not as sound as they once were. They can run often if not over medicated, the trainers are certainly to blame as well. Masking real pain is a recipe for disaster.

  13. How many times

    Racing shouldn't exist

It's obvious that horses are dying from it

Clearly no one cares about these poor horses and its upsetting to see and know that so many horses are dying just for money and fame

  14. Nothing here to see or read— just a bunch of yammering, liberal, do-gooders, too stupid to anything, including voting democratic!

  15. All you tree-hugging liberals should get a clue!!!The sport has ALWAYS HAD AN INHERENT DANGER OF FATAL INJURY TO THE PARTICIPANTS!! That being said..i have raced STANDARDBREDS for over 40 years and have witnessed my share of fatalities..I started racing in Ca. so i am familiar with the landscape..The problems, imaginary or not, started when the CHRB mandated the UNIVERSAL switch to synthetic by all TB tracks…The failure of two separate SYNTHETIC SURFACES showed that the Santa Anita track is a fickle mistress..Even after going back to a dirt surface, the damage was done..Santa Anita has been grievously injured and nothing short of a 100%rebuild of the surface from sub base to cushion is the only possible fix..It is sad to watch, but more than a couple of millions will need to be spent to revive the Old Gal…

  16. The second jock fell off the horse because the horse CLIPPED heels…thats common. Sometimes jocks still on, sometimes they dont

  17. How many of those jockeys are in this country legally…how about the exercise riders and the hot walkers? What was the actual health of all the horses involved in these incidents? Something is going on here for certain. Okay, today's dead equine clipped heels…it happens, but the death toll is staggering. This is a disgrace. These fatal breakdowns are becoming commonplace. When I first started following horse racing in the 1960s, breakdowns happened, BUT, they were pretty rare. I don't recall, over the past 45 years, any track in the United States ever having this many equine deaths in the short period of time these deaths have occurred. This is unacceptable…completely unacceptable.

  18. For one, NO Turf race should have a section of Dirt that the horses have to cross over period. Many Tracks have a Turf on the inside of the Dirt Track. There did seem to be a tangle up of horses in this race. Arms Runner was cut off. Not sure if that made him stumble or the change from Turf to Dirt.

  19. A quote from turfwriter, William H.P. Robertson, from 1963, in his book the History of Thoroughbred Racing in America. He was comparing English racing to American racing. Here it is…"Compared with ours, English racing is what the country corner store is to the supermarket. On a big day a Newmarket, 10,000 is a big crowd and very few of these get to sit down. But sitting or standing, they appreciate the horse. Not merely as a gambling device that happens to breathe, but as a horse….as a creature of flesh and blood and heart and spirit. If their horse is beaten, they are likely to understand that he was cut off and had no chance….even if the horse and his trainer know better. What they have, and what we seem to be losing, is the personal interest in the animal. And this concern for the horse is central to the spirit of racing. This, and the fun of racing,. Lose this spirit and there will be no racing…..only races. This is what my mother meant when she said, "We cannot allow the spirit of racing to be bought." It will not be bought if we keep commercialism within bounds. Uncontrolled, commercialism can be our enemy. Contained, it can be our friend. But only we can contain it. Only we can bring about the return of the horse, and put the horse back in racing. It's up to us, who know the spirit of racing, and who care about it, to preserve as, in the words of your….and may I say my…..late, great Joe Palmer, an "athletic contest among horses."

  20. The owners and trainers have the last say if they want to race at santa anita or not. If they do not feel confidants than move to another track…Basically the horses are bred to race and that is exactly what their owners intend to do if not at Santa A it will be somewhere else..

  21. all of you people saying that they drug the horses actually they dont because the track checks the horses blood and if it has any drug the owners dont get any money from the race they also get disqualified and may get fined for alot of money and also peta kills way more animals

  22. Jockeys fall all the time, that has nothing to do with track. CBS 2 go fetch other news and stay out of racing

  23. UPDATE, common sense prevailed and Santa Anita closed the dangerous hillside race course, unfortunately a little late. Not only was the turf to dirt to turf switch dangerous also because the downhill gravity momentum caused some horses to carry the final turn very wide interfering with outside horses ( sometimes colliding or clipping heels ) That was the spot that ended Laffit Pincay,s career with a neck injury. I still think they need to redo the main track, (new mixture of dirt or the best synthetic 🙂

  24. Omg give up racing industry you kill over 1,000 horses per year and to the news reporters don't talk about it because it will make the racing industry more know and more people want to see it so they will stay open longer. Put in the comments do you know other sport that kills 23 horses in 4 months.

  25. As long as thoroughbreds are training before maturity – breakdowns shouldn’t be a surprise. As long as thoroughbreds are bred to have long thin legs and powerful heavy bodies breakdowns will happen. When horses are forced to run before their bones mature breakdowns will happen. When a horse runs in a race – “life altering” (fatal injury) can happen. This has nothing to do with PETA. This has everything to do with a sport that generates huge profits at the expense of horses lives. Horse racing rewards their famous high earning winners with a trip to the slaughter house killing floor when they no longer produce profit. The thanks they receive for serving their master. To expensive to keep in retirement in their old age. Use them up and dump them to whomever has $100.00 for a broken down horse. Shame on those who cruelly exploit these magnificent creatures.

  26. People die in car wrecks so remove all cars and roads. Some people arent just concerned about the horse race accidents. If there were no accidents they would still want to shut all tracks down.

  27. It's horse racing. Accidents happen all the time. It's an inherent risk of the sport. This one has nothing to do with the previous ones, which were deaths due to an unknown virus at this point! This is a media outlet trying to make something out of nothing and basically just really bad journalism. Shameful.

  28. If you don’t work in the backside, get bent go be a nuisance elsewhere, lots of other things need attention. Nowadays everybody wants to be a goodie 2 shoes mind your own business especially people who have never had any interaction with horses

  29. Horse racing run thoroughbreds at 2 years of age, before growth maturity.
Therein lies the problem. Too much too soon. Breakdown is a common problem.
Nothing new here. Cannon bone, tendons, growth plates take the punishment
when you run wide open. Responsibly ridden, injury probably won’t happen.

  30. I don’t ever like to see an animal hurt… not ever. However, certain animals have inherent traits. Horses were meant to run. If not on a track they would be running in a pasture, it’s what they were born to do. IMO, one of the greatest racehorses of last 50 years was Ruffian. I have watched film on every race she ran. I was not born early enough to she her run in any other format. She was born to run… big, fast, competitive…. she died running, in the lead where she loved to be… a tragic destiny but she would not have chosen another.

  31. Always very sad when an accident like this happend at the track. But I disagree with those who say horse racing is “inhuman”. These thouroubreds live pampered horsey lives. Let’s worry about the millions of human who are living on the streets tonight with empty bellies.

  32. Theyre bodies just give out try running long nonestop laps at full speed, poor horses I say give them 2 laps 3 at most

  33. I saw a guy crying after this. I walked up to him and put my arm on his shoulder and told him he’s in horse heaven. He looked at me and said “ I hope he is in Hell The SOB cost me 3k”.

  34. I think the radius of the turn and soft dirt and weight shift of jockey is a major factor of these injurys.

  35. Horses aren't dieing they are being put down because their only purpose is to make the owner money almost as bad as what the horse had to go threw to get that fast

  36. NOT ONE OF THESE PEOPLE REFERENCES TO A SINGLE HORSE BY THEIR NAME….

THAT SAYS ENOUGH FOR ME….. NEEDS TO BE PUT DOWN LIKE GREYHOUND RACING, COCK FIGHTING, A KID WALIKING A PITBULL IN BOSTON…… LOL …..

  37. I have not follow the deaths of those 23 horses too close, but i see a lot of people refering to the track surface…..the change from grass to dirt to grass again. My question is, did most of the accidents happend in grass races. Josef let me know please.

  38. The last one was an accident and could have happened at this year kentucky derby too in that incident that everyone knows about it. So it could happend anywhere, not just at santa anita.

  39. In endurance riding (50 mile and 100 mile races ) you can not compete on a a horse untill it is 5 years old on race day . The thoroughbreds racing on tracks are only two year olds . Think about that . Why is that allowed?

  40. People should no longer be against people who have sex with other species. zoos don't do this, to them. That is for sure. The relentless pursuit for money makes people to do this to animals. People are blind in one eye, not being able to see out, of the other.
