Chincoteague Pony Drill Team Promotes the Breed

October 23, 2019

WE AND REALLY IN THE ENTIRE
WORLD NEVER GET TIRED OF SEEING THE SUGAR TAKE PONIES MAKING
THE SWIM ACROSS THE ATLANTIC CHANNEL. IT’S AN EVENT THAT HAS
PUT THE TINY ISLAND CHINCOTEAGUE ON THE WORLD STAGE
AND AFTER THE SWIM THE PONIES ARE PARADED IN TOWN WHERE THEY
WILL EVENTUALLY BE AUCTIONED OFF. BUT WHAT HAPPENS AFTER
THAT. WELL SOME OF THEM HAVE
ENDED UP ON A FARM BLOCK THEM TO BECOME SUPERSTARS BY THE WAY
OF THE SUGAR TEAGUE PONY DRILL TEAM CANDY ALLEN COACHES. SHE
FATIGUE PONY DRILL TEAM BUT HAS BEEN A HORSE OWNER SINCE SHE
WAS A TEENAGER. SHE SAYS
EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN SHE GOT HER FIRST SHE COULD TAKE PONY
DURING A VACATION TRIP. WE
FOUND THAT SHE COULD TAKE PONIES AND FOUND A PONY MISTY
THE SECOND OR MISTY TOO IT WAS THE GRANDDAUGHTER MISTY AND SHE
WAS FOR SALE 13 YEARS ALL TOTALLY INBRED. VERY WILD WE
ENDED UP BUYER WHICH WENT AGAINST EVERYTHING I EVER KNEW
ABOUT HORSES GETTING A WILD HORSE THAT ALL BUT TOOK HER
HOME GENTLE TO IRAN. SHE WENT
ON TO BECOME A HUNDRED CHAMPION FOR MY KIDS. THAT WAS 25 YEARS
AGO TODAY. CANDY OWNS A HORSE
FARM AND SEVERAL SHEEP TO TAKE HORSES WE LIKE TO SAY THAT THEY
HAVE HORSE SIZED BRAIN AND LARGE PONY BODY. THEY’RE VERY
WILLING LISTEN. THEY’RE VERY
CAPABLE OF LEARNING. THEY’RE
VERY HARDY ANIMALS THEY LOVE KIDS AND THEY’RE JUST VERY
INTELLIGENT THIS IS SURF AND TURF. SHE IS I THINK 16 YEARS
OLD. SHE DID PONY DRILL TEAM
CAPTAIN EMILY BAINES SAYS HER LOVE OF SHE COULD TAKE HORSES
WAS ALSO THE RESULT OF A VISIT TO THE ISLAND. THE DRILL TEAM
ADVICE CAME A LITTLE LATER THAN THEY SAY IF YOU WANT TO DO A
CHRISTMAS PARADE. WHAT’S
THE FIRST THING I EVER DID. AND I DID THAT I WAS LIKE I AM A
FOOL. PLEASE ASK ME AGAIN AND
AGAIN AND AGAIN JUST KEPT GOING FROM THERE. THE CHINCOTEAGUE
DRILL TEAM’S PRIMARY JOB IS TO PROMOTE THE PONIES AND BREED AS
THEY PERFORM WE PERFORM CHRISTMAS PARADES YEAR ROUND. WE ACTUALLY DO A ST. PATRICK’S
DAY PARADE 4TH OF JULY PARADE WE HAVE COMPETED THE DELAWARE
HORSE EXPO. WE COMPETE WITH
OTHER DRILL TEAMS THERE CANDY SAYS SPECTATORS WHO ONLY SEE
THE PONIES DURING THE ANNUAL PONY SWIM ACTIVITIES ARE OFTEN
SURPRISED TO SEE WHAT THE PONIES CAN DO. WE THINK
THAT ONE OF THE BEST BREEDS THERE ARE IN A WORLD WITH WHAT
THEY CAN DO. AND THEY CAN KEEP UP WITH ANY HORSE BREEDER IS
CANDY CREDITS THEIR HARDINESS TO THE BREED AND THE FACT THAT
IT HAS LIVED IN THE WILD FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. AS FOR
THE TEAM RIDERS BOTH MALE AND FEMALE MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF
FIVE YEARS OF GOOD RIDING. THERE IS A LOT OF COMMITMENT WE
MEET ONCE A WEEK TO PRACTICE BUT THEY RIDE THEIR HORSES IN
BETWEEN THEY’RE JUST IS YOU HAD TO HAVE THAT SPECIAL LOVE FOR
IT BECAUSE IF YOU DON’T IT’S JUST NOT WORTH IT MOST RIDERS
BEGIN WITH TIGGER THE HORSE. EMILY LET ME RIDE BECAUSE HE’S
CALM AND GENTLE. HE IS A
VETERAN OF THE SWIM. HE WAS A
WILD HORSE AND HE ACTUALLY DOES HIS TRICKS. HE WILL BATTLE HE
WILL SMILE OH HE’LL WAVE. HE
DOES EVERYTHING ANOTHER
IMPORTANT PART OF THE DRILL TEAM IS CARING FOR THE HORSES
AND OF COURSE THE VALUE OF TEAMWORK. LIKE I THINK LIKE ANY
OTHER SPORTS TEAM YOU LEARN TO WORK TOGETHER TRUST EACH OTHER. YOU HAVE TO LIKE ACTUALLY
COMMIT AND THEREFORE EACH OTHER IS EACH SEGMENT HOLDS THE TEAM
TOGETHER AND THAT’S SOMETHING THAT KEEPS KENNEDY BURSTING
WITH PRIDE I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THE LORD WORKS IN MY LIFE EVERY
DAY AND THIS WHOLE THING WITH THE CHINCOTEAGUE IS SOMETHING I
NEVER ENVISION AND IT’S JUST BEEN A BLESSING THE WHOLE WAY
THROUGH. BEFORE WE DO A
PERFORMANCE I I’M THE MOST NERVOUS PERSON IN THE GRIP. AND
THEN WHEN YOU’RE OUT THERE PERFORMING SOMETIME IT JUST
BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES BECAUSE ARE SO GREAT? AND NOTHING NOT
EVEN WILD HORSES COULD DRAG HER AWAY AND CANDY SAYS ONE BIG
MISCONCEPTION ABOUT PURCHASING A SHE COULD TAKE HORSE AT
THE ANNUAL AUCTION IS THAT THEY’RE READY TO RIDE SHE SAYS
THEY AREN’T. IT TAKES A COUPLE OF YEARS AND A LOT OF
DEDICATION TO TRAIN THE HORSE BUT ONCE YOU DO ARE GENTLE
GIANTS JUST LIKE TIGGER THE HORSE I WAS RIDING HE WAS
SO THOSE FIRST TIME I’D EVER RIDDEN HORSE. HE DID SO WELL
THANK YOU. NERVOUS WELL JUST
