ABOUT COWS Cows are also known as cattle. Cows are herbivores. meaning they eat grasses, corn, hay,
barley, beet pulp, grass and wheat.� They They do not eat meat. Cows are smart and intelligent animals. Cows are also social animals and interact
with other cows. Cows say moo as a way to communicate
with other cows. Cows
from different regions have different “moo” accents Cows have best friends and get stressed when
they are separated There are over 1 billion cows that live in
the world and there are many types of cows. Around 300 million cows live in India! In India where they practice the Hindu religion
cows are sacred. They are allowed to roam the streets free. A male cow is called a bull. A baby cow is called a calf. The length of time for a cow to be pregnant
is the same as humans: nine months. A calf is about 90 pounds when it is born. Cows drink 35 gallons a water a day.They eat
50 pounds of food a day. Cows are ruminants, which are cud chewing
mammals. They can digest food that can normally not
be digested. Camels and sheep also are also ruminants. Cattle stomachs have four chambers which help
break down what they eat Beef, leather and milk comes from cows. Milk can be made into other dairy products
such as butter, cheese, and yogurt. Cows produce most of the milk that people
drink. Cows do not produce milk until after they
have given birth. It takes 350 squirts from a cow to get one
gallon of milk. A cow can produce 6 gallons of milk a day. Cows can live up to 25 years. Cows can run 35 miles per hour. Cattle trained to be draft animals are known
as oxen (ox). Cows actually sit down and stand up around
fourteen times each day. But most of the time we see them standing. When you see a cow grazing, they are not biting
the grass but instead curling their tongues around it. Cows have panoramic vision. That means they can almost see 360 degrees
all the way around. Cows are able to see color. But they are red/green color blind. In the sport of bull fighting, bulls are angered
by the movement of the cape rather than its red color. A typical day for a cow consists of 8 hours
eating, 8 hours chewing their cud and 8 hours sleeping. Cows can walk upstairs. But their knee structure design doesn’t
allow them to walk downstairs.
