Drag race: Audi R8 vs Ducati Panigale V4 | Car vs Bike | Autocar

October 30, 2019

You join us for another Autocar drag race,
this time it is supercar vs. superbike. Four-wheel-drive vs. one-wheel-drive and two very different
ways of going fast within the VW group. Now if you like this video, please don’t forget
to subscribe to the channel for videos like this every single week. The Panigale
V4 is the fastest mass production Ducati in the current range and it marks the significant
switch from a V-twin cylinder engine to a V4, effectively to make a better racing bike.
Its 1103cc engine produces 211bhp at, wait for it, 13,000rpm and 91.5lb ft at 10,000
revs. It comes with fully adjustable front and rear suspension with a single sided aluminium
swing arm at the back and it wears Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP’s as standard, they
tell me they’re good. It has a kerb weight of just 198kgs, I know, that isn’t very
much. What really stands out about this bike though is how technologically advanced it
is. The 6-speed gearbox comes with Ducati quick shift meaning you can keep the throttle
pinned through upshifts. It comes with wheelie control too so flat upshifts won’t throw
you off the back. It has various ride modes and power settings but most importantly for
this test, it has launch control. This V4 This V4 is not the V4 S, the S would be 3kgs lighter
but we’ve gone for what you would call the standard model in each manufacturers range.
So, likewise we have an Audi R8 V10 and not the V10+ so in this form it develops 540bhp
at 7800rpm and 398lb ft at 6500rpm from its 5.2 litre V10. The R8 weighs 1640kgs so
putting somebody inside it makes less of a difference thank it does on the motorbike but
it also has launch control, that’s activated by putting the car into dynamic mode, turning
the traction control to the right setting and then standing hard on the brake before
standing quickly on the accelerator at the same time. So here goes. At launch then things
are a bit give or take, the Audi’s four-wheel-drive system would like to throw itself down the
track quicker than the bike but the launch control takes a mite longer to react than
it does on the Ducati. The Ducati meanwhile would get away very quickly but Neil has to
feather the clutch slightly so that despite the wheelie control, he doesn’t get thrown
off the back and once the panigale hooks up, it is a comprehensive victory for the motorcycle.
And so to the times, the Audi R8 does 0-60mph in 3.43 seconds and 0-100mph in 7.72 seconds,
it breaks the standing ¼ mile mark at 11.5 seconds at 126.6mph and a standing ½ mile in 18.3
seconds at 150.4mph, which is quick but not as quick as the Ducati which goes from 0-60mph
in 3.28 seconds, it get’s to 100mph in 6.3 seconds, that’s almost a second and ½ faster
than the R8, it’ll do a standing ¼ in 10.84 seconds at 142mph and standing ½ mile in
16.46 seconds but we carried on beyond the ½ mile, well Neil did because he’s braver than I
am, up to and beyond 186mph where the speedo on the Ducati goes blank! Now, there’s a
reason for that, when Suzuki launched the Hayabusa in 1999, it exceeded 310km/h, that’s
190mph, fears of a European or regulatory crackdown lead motorcycle manufacturers to
kind of agree with each other that they wouldn’t make anything that went any faster than 300km/h which is 186mph except that you’ll note, the Ducati is still accelerating and there’s about
1200rpm to go. If you like this nonsense please don’t forget to subscribe and find us all

  1. Although cars are slower than bikes, they make up for it in terms of comfort, safety and (in my opinion) styling.

I do like comfort and safety in my transportation, because I'm a pretty low risk guy. I also prefer how cars are styled, with more freedom to shape and design it.

  2. The car v bike argument is redundant unless comparing two specific examples. Without this only large generalisations can be made, such as most bikes are faster than most cars yet the worlds fastest cars are faster than the worlds fastest bikes. If you had a car that had the same weight, power/weight, gear ratios, tyre contact patch, and drag coefficient then ruling out driver / rider skill they should produce the same lap times. Such a car would likely look like a supercart.

  3. Why people can't understand that supercars can never beat superbikes….and the audi awd just gives a initial throw if there would be rwd car then the scene might be close

  4. If you look at the R8 1/4 mile time, over a 1/4 mile there are many motorcycles that could have beaten it, most not so comprehensively. Even motorcycles from the early 1980's could give it a run for it's money.

  5. In acceleration the bike can even win, but at final speed the R8 wins, could put the PLUS version against this bike

  6. I ran 10.2 on as standard cbr1000 09 model with my fat ass riding it.

10.8 for a new machine with all electronics and power is embarrassing.

  7. and to think that I have a V4 "Speciale" with Akrapovic putting out 226 hp! I'd have to find a Bugatti to give me a run for the money!

  8. 1979 as a 20 year old I put $A17 of fuel in my car. Being a tightarse I bought a Honda CB100 (100mpg) to save money AND with the ability to lane split (mainly to get to the front at traffic lights). Even my little bike could get that start so I could quickly get into a lane (annoyed the hell out of commuter car drivers but nobody was stopping them to do the same).

  9. The car had no chance, we all know that, but Iโ€™d still have the Car because a big accident in a Car youโ€™ve a chance of survival, on a Bike..? Iโ€™m not so sure.

  10. Bikes donโ€™t count, there way faster so thereโ€™s no point chasing/ holding them up, let em past!๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜Ž

  11. the bike does 0-60 in 2.8s and is not only the fastest street legal Ducati but the fastest street legal motorcycle on earth this dude got slower times because he was feathering the clutch incase it wheelies and he cannot control it but I know a regular rider that can get 2.8s

  12. The future of transportation and energy is Magnet Drive. A magnet manufactured in 1900 has the same energy today. No heat, no energy loss, huge energy/weight and is relatively cheap. Don't worry, the Government will sit on this until gasoline is at least $10 a gallon in the USA…

  13. autocar is really a stupid channel. the driver can not drive fast. panigale is much faster with a good driver.

  14. My dream bike ducati panigale nailed the audi r8๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚.

  16. Sorry was that even a race. That's not even the panigal S or the R. These car twats think they are so cool in their pieces of ahit yet a bike will hammer anything it is put up against even a Bugatti. Good video though ๐Ÿ˜

  17. Funny, my ancient 1999 ducati 996, with 110 horsepower was able to run the same 10.7 e.t. when I raced it the track, as this bike with nearly double the power..

  18. Should had brought in the Audi + but it wouldnt had made a difference. Any liter bike would take down the super car.

  19. Motorcycle companies are such fucken assholes. Letโ€™s see a 600cc bike Vs a supercar? Oh wait the supercar and take a 600cc bikes. But motorcycle manufacturers make sure 1000ccโ€™s bikes are only used so they could never look bad. Bring out your smaller bikes to even the playing field! Not one motorcycle company would ever do this.

  20. I'd still prefer the Audi. Can't trade comfort, safety and better aerodynamics for more speed. Bikes are cool, there's no denying that. But they are just for fun, they aren't proper vehicles. A supercar can offer more than enough performance in most situations anyway, if we are talking about the real life. Unless there's a traffic jam of course. That would be another story.

  22. So a Redeye can outrun an R8 in quarter and trap higher speed? Damn. Supercars looking slower ever year compared to Dodges muscle cars.
