From the PPB Mounted Patrol to a therapy horse

YOU CAN EXPECT HEAVY SMOKE AND FIRE TRAFFIC THROUGHOUT THE AREA. IT’S OFFICIAL, THE PORTLAND POLICE MOUNTED PATROL UNIT HAS BEEN DECOMMISSIONED. THERE WASN’T FUNDING ANYMORE TO KEEP THE HORSES. WE WERE THERE THIS WEEK AS ONE OF THE UNIT’S HORSES WENT TO HIS NEW HOME, A PLACE WHERE HE WILL CONTINUE SERVING THE COMMUNITY. ONE OF PORTLAND’S MOST NOBLE PUBLIC SERVANTS HAS A NEW ROLE. SOMETHING ABOUT THE LOOK IN HIS EYE REVEALS HIS SENSE OF WHAT IS CHANGING. LET HIM WALK AROUND, CHILL OUT, SAY HI. ANNA: HE USED TO BE ON THE STREETS AS PART OF THE MOUNTED PATROL UNIT. HE WAS, IN FACT, A HORSE KICKED BY A MAN IN 2014, WHO WAS PROMPTLY ARRESTED FOR THE ATTACK. HE DID OUTWEIGH HIS ATTACKER BY 1000 POUNDS AND WAS UNHURT AND UNFAZED. THIS IS THE NEW HOME WE HAVE CHOSEN FOR HIM. ANNA: OFFICER MELISSA NEWHART IS PART OF THE UNIT JUST DECOMMISSIONED LAST WEEK. FOR HER, THIS DAY, THIS MOMENT, IS BITTERSWEET. HE LOOKS REALLY HAPPY. I AM SO HAPPY FOR HIM TO HAVE ALL THE SPACE TO RUN. WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO SEE WHAT HE LIKES TO DO. ANNA: HIS NEW HOME IS A HORSE THERAPY PROGRAM IN BEAVERTON CALLED FORWARD STRIDE. HERE HE WILL CONNECT WITH PEOPLE NEEDING THERAPY, LIKE VETERANS WITH PTSD. IT IS EMOTIONALLY SOOTHING TO THEM AND COMFORTING AT THE SAME TIME, SOMETHING DOCTORS CAN’T PROVIDE ON A PRESCRIPTION. IT IS NICE TO HONOR HIM AND THE POLICE OFFICERS BY CONTINUING ON WITH THAT CARE. ANNA: THE FOLKS HERE SAY OFFICERS LIKE MELISSA NEWHART CAN VISIT ANYTIME. OBVIOUSLY, WE ARE HEARTBROKEN ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR UNIT, BUT I CAN’T THINK OF A BETTER PLACE FOR HIM TO GO, SINCE YOU CAN’T BE WITH US ANYMORE. ANNA: THE OTHER HORSES OF THE
