Hong Kong Horse Racing 2019 – Happy Wednesday At Happy Valley Racecourse

August 24, 2019

In this video, I am visiting the Hong Kong Jockey Club Happy Valley Racecourse which is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong. I will show you how I got there to help you find your way when you visit Hong Kong. A visit to the Racetrack is not only for betting, but it is also a social gathering where people come to both meetup and show off πŸ˜‰ So stay tuned and come enjoy an exciting evening with me at the fantastic Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong. Please make sure that you subscribe to the Happy and Away channel by clicking the “Red Subscribe” button and also the bell so that you will be notified when I post new videos. Thank you! In this video, I will visit the Hong Kong Jockey Club Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong. It is located in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island. From my hotel in Jordan, I took the MTR from Jordan MTR station to Admiral MTR station on Hong Kong Island. At Admiral MTR station I ended up in a bit of a queue, but that is normal at this time of afternoon/evening in Hong Kong when people are going home from work. From Admiral MTR station I took the MTR to Wan Chai MTR station and got off. I then walked from the station to the Happy Valley Racecourse. It took me about 20-30 minutes to get there. The Hong Kong Jockey Club is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong, having been founded in 1884. It is a non-profit organization providing horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment in Hong Kong. The organization is the largest taxpayer in Hong Kong, as well as the largest community benefactor. And this is clearly the Members Entrance so it will not be for me πŸ˜‰ and I will continue to the public entrance. The Happy Valley Racecourse is one of the places that I have wanted to visit for a long time. I remember watching a travel documentary from Hong Kong many years ago and I still remember the Happy Valley Racecourse, so it will be really interesting to finally set my own feet inside the famous racecourse. I have to admit that I am a bit late as I should have got her earlier. The MTR trip took a bit longer than I expected… even that I knew there would be a lot of people moving around in the MTR system in the afternoon and early evening. The racetrack opens 5:15 pm on Happy Wednesday race nights. This is the public entrance and it is where I will enter since I am not a member of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Depending on where you are staying in Hong Kong, the trams can be an alternative to get to the racecourse. And it is so nice to be able to use my Octopus Card to pay the entrance here as well. The Octopus Card is a must have when you visit Hong Kong. Entrance fee paid in the simplest way possible and we are inside the Happy Valley Racecourse!! πŸ™‚ The entrance fee is only HK$ 10,- so it is a really cheap entertainment deal you get… if you only stick to the entrance fee.. πŸ˜‰ But as you will see during the video the drinks and food are not expensive at all. As long as you stay away from losing money it is a cheap nigh out with lots of entertainment. Just remember that it is a minimum age requirement of 18 to enter the racecourse during races. It is not very difficult to find out where to place your bets πŸ˜‰ A nice cold beer would be just perfect now πŸ˜‰ First time here for me so there are so many things to look at. All the people, noises, smells, lights, movements makes it to a really interesting experience. A nice selection of beer servings… Hmmm… which one to try… first.. πŸ˜€ I decided to try the popular Japanese wheat flavor beer KIRIN ICHIBAN and it sure tasted good πŸ˜‰ Some sparkling wine perhaps for the ones that enjoy that? I am not going to do any betting as I have no clue about the horses, but rather just walk around and enjoy the atmosphere. It is definitely worth to visit the racetrack even that you are not doing any gambling. Just to get a feel of the racetrack and everything that goes on in here. Some light food perhaps? Most people look like they are enjoying themselves. Perhaps they have already won some money? πŸ™‚ The staff is preparing the starting barrier for another race and let’s have a look at that. The jockeys getting the horses ready. Some eager photographers have been out early to get a good position for taking pictures. All the horses are now in behind the starting barrier…. and the red light is flashing… And they are off… Looks like most of them got off to a good start. And here they come after one lap. And the starting barrier comes out again. New race coming up. Stamping the grass back in place after the last race start. Last preparations are done as the red light is flashing again… Some quick maintenance is being done before the horses coming back after the first lap. Sounds like someone has put some money on number 10 πŸ˜‰ I think I will go and look around some more. Many people are here to bet also. Serious betting… There is also a live band to entertain between the races, but I will not include it in this video as it would probably end up with a copyright claim on my video. Showing off the horses so that the betters can choose which one they will bet on. Horse Racing is a serious business with a lot of money involved. There is a race on so the band has to wait to play until it is done. Does it really help to have beautiful girls promoting your products like beer for example? Yes, it seems like it is working well…. ;-D Well, it was time for another beer anyway…. ;-D Choose your horse well by looking at all their info at the touch-screens. lol with a beer in one hand and the camera in the other I seem to have run out of hands to use the touchscreen…. The race is getting close to the end so it will be interesting to see who will be the fastest and win. And the winner is…. There are many snack opportunities on the racetrack also if you are hungry. It is time to go and have a look at other areas of the racetrack. Going to the racetrack is also a social happening. To show off πŸ˜‰ and also to meet up and have a good time. I am now inside the building and will take the elevator up to the higher floors soon to get a better view. But let’s walk around a bit more to look at people enjoying themselves. There are no lack of opportunities to buy some refreshments πŸ™‚ Up the stairs and under the first roof is another good position to watch the races. Looks like people are having a good time πŸ™‚ Waiting for the elevator to take us to the higher floors. And we are up at the higher floors where there are more tv-screens, comfortable seats and a fantastic view of the racecourse. A race is taking place now. As you can see there are not only horse races taking place here as they also have football, hockey and rugby fields. The maintenance crew is back out on the field to fix the grass. Inside there is more quiet to concentrate on all the details of the horses to make sure you place your bets on the right horse. Sorry about my finger in the corner of the lens. I have such a small camera that sometimes my fingers gets in the way πŸ˜‰ People are deeply concentrating on the details of the horse races. “No Eating or Drinking”… I am sure no one below us wants a burger or a glass of drink in their head from this height… Some are busy planning their next bets πŸ˜‰ while others are busy being social πŸ™‚ Preparing for the next race. And the jockeys are coming riding. The horses are led to the starting barrier. The last horse gets into the box. This is how it is to be a “One man crew” πŸ˜‰ Filming with one hand and take photos with the other πŸ˜‰ Sounds like some people are excited about the race so far πŸ˜‰ Well, it is time to start thinking about going back to the hotel. There is another day tomorrow and more exploring to do in Hong Kong. The trams that brought people here will also bring people back home. And the Hong Kong Police is ready to assist so everybody can leave safely. At the Happy and Away You-Tube channel, I invite you to come exploring with me every time I post a new travel video.
