Horse Race Subject Of Major Controversy In Crandall

August 11, 2019

FOOTBALL FOR KIDS ALL TONIGHT ON THE “CBS EVENING NEWS.” WE WILL SEE YOU SHORTLY. IS IT UNLICENSED HORSERACING OR HORSE TRAINING? AN EVENT NEXT MONTH ALREADY BEING PROMOTED IN KAUFMAN COUNTY. NOW THE SUBJECT OF A MAJOR CONTROVERSY THERE. JANIE MILES. Reporter: SHIPS DEPUTIES PASSED OUT FLYERS AROUND CRANDALL ALERTING RESIDENTS TO A PUBLIC HEARING ON FRIDAY OVER A PERMIT FOR A MASS GATHERING. THAT GATHERING IS BEING BILLED AS A HORSE TRAINING EVENT, BUT RESIDENTS AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES BELIEVE IT’S A MASK FOR UNLICENSED HORSERACES. WE WERE BLESSED TO FIND THIS PLACE. Reporter: GARY HESTER LOOKS OVER THE PROPERTY IN CRANDALL HE AND HIS WIFE PURCHASED WITH A SENSE OF SERENITY. I LOVE IT OUT HERE. Reporter: BUT THE PEACE AND QUIET HESTER AND OTHER RESIDENTS MOVED TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF DFW TO FIND COULD SOON BE THREATENED. A PROMOTER IS SEEKING A PERMIT FOR A MASS GATHERING NEXT MONTH ON THIS PROPERTY OFF A TWO-LANE ROAD. IT’S BILLED AS A HORSE TRAINING EVENT WITH NO ORGANIZED BETTING, BUT PREVIOUS EVENTS AROUND KAUFMAN COUNTY HAVE DRAWN MORE THAN A THOUSAND AND HORSE MATCH-UPS ARE ALREADY BEING PROMOTED ONLINE. POSTS ON THE PROMOTER’S FACEBOOK PAGE EXPOSED PEOPLE WHO SUPPOSEDLY DON’T PAY THEIR BETS. IT’S ALL ABOUT HORSERACING. Reporter: THERE IS A STARTING GATE AND A PROPOSED TRACK WHERE WE FOUND HORSES AND TRAINERS WORKING WHO DECLINED COMMENT. AT A SIMILAR EVENT THIS YEAR IN ANOTHER PART OF THE COUNTY, AUTHORITIES ISSUED 30 CITATIONS, MADE THREE ARRESTS, INCLUDING ONE FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND ARE MAKING IT AS HARD AS POSSIBLE FOR PROMOTERS TO GET APPROVAL FOR THIS ONE. I THINK IT’S A BAD IDEA FOR THE RESIDENTS, BECAUSE THE RESIDENTS MOVED TO THE COUNTY FOR PEACE AND QUIET, AND IT DISRUPTS THEIR WAY OF LIVING. Reporter: NOISE, TRAFFIC, AND LITTER ARE AMONG THE OBVIOUS CONCERNS. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO EXPRESS THEIR CONCERNS FRIDAY MORNING. IT HAS THE WRONG SMELL TO ME. IT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE SOMETHING I WANT IN MY COMMUNITY. Reporter: WE SENT MESSAGES TO THE PROMOTER OF THE EVENT AND THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE. NO ONE RESPONDED. A JUDGE WILL DECIDE ON FRIDAY

  1. It's private property. If the neighbors want serene, they can buy a bigger property where they don't have to see or hear them. (As I have)
