Horse racing to live on in Arizona

September 18, 2019

AFTER TALK OF THE END OF HORSE RACING HERE IN ARIZONA… THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF GAMING AND RACING DIVISION SAYS THAT’S NOT THE CASE — AT LEAST THIS YEAR. THE DIVISION SENT OUT A NOTICE TODAY SAYING, IN PART… THERE ARE NO PLANS TO SHUT DOWN RACING IN ARIZONA IN THE COMING FISCAL YEAR. THE DIVISION IS FINANCIALLY SOUND. AND THE DIVISION HAS NO PLANS TO REQUEST ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATIONS. NEW AT 10… NINE ON YOUR SIDE’S MAX DARROW TELLS US ABOUT A CENTURY-OLD HORSE RACE THAT WILL DO WHAT IT CAN TO KEEP RUNNING AT THE RACE TRACK. NATS FEET CRUNCHING ON DIRT AS JIM LEWIS WALKS AROUND THE RACE TRACK AT THE SONOITA FAIRGROUNDS… QUICK NAT CRUNCHING FEET HE TAKES A DEEP BREATH — LIFE SEEMS TO KEEP TRYING TO GET IN THE WAY OF THE SONOITA RACES. JIM “JUST DOESN’T SEEM TO END, DOES IT?” YET THE CENTURY LONG TRADITION KEEPS KEEPIN ON. NATS THIS YEAR RACES YEAR 102 — THE RACES SURVIVED THE SAWMILL FIRE. BUT NOW — AFTER WEDNESDAY’S REPORT THAT ALL IS WELL WITH THE STATE RACING COMMISSION, SONOITA CAN BREATHE EASY FOR THE COMING YEAR WHILE EXPECTING THE STATE WILL COME THROUGH IN YEARS TO COME. JIM “BY LAW, WE HAVE TO HAVE REGULATORS — WE HAVE TO HAVE THOSE PEOPLE THAT ARE OVERSEEING WHAT WE ARE DOING.” MONEY-WISE, AND BETTING-WISE — THAT IS. HOWEVER, NOT SIMPLY RACING- WISE. MAX “LEWIS SAYS NEXT YEAR FOR THE SONOITA RACES — YEAR 103 — WILL GO ON. IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN, IT MAY BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT, BUT NOTHING IS STOPPING THE RACES FROM CONTINUING.” JIM “WE’LL JUST GO BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS — HAVING FUN AND SEEING WHO HAS THE FASTEST HORSE.” LEWIS WANTS THE TRADITIONAL RACE TO LIVE ON — IT’S GREAT FOR THE ECONOMY. JIM “LITTLE PLACES LIKE THIS THRIVE ON HORSE RACING. THIS IS A BIG PART OF THIS TOWN, A LOT OF MONEY COMES BACK IN HERE, AND WE DEFINITELY CAN USE IT.” NATS RACE BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY — IT’S PERSONAL FOR LEWIS — AND HE’LL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO KEEP THE TRADITION ALIVE. “MY GREAT GRANDFATHER STARTED THE HORSE RACING HERE. SO I’D LOVE TO KEEP THE TRADITION GOING IN SOME WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.” -THE RACES WON’T BE CHANGING THIS YEAR — BUT HIS IDEAS IF IT WERE TO HAVE TO CHANGE — -RANCHERS COULD RIDE THEIR HORSES, THEY COULD FIND WAYS TO GET THE COMMUNITY MORE INVOLVED. -SAFE TO SAY, IT’S NOT GOING
