Horses Evacuated From Gibson Ranch

August 17, 2019

SKY2 IS OVER THE AREA, SEVERAL HOMES AND BUILDINGS WENT UP IN FLAMES. CBS 2’S KRISTINE LAZAR HAD A VERY CLOSE CALL THIS AFTERNOON WHEN THE CREEK FIRE BURNED A HORSE RANCH IN SHADOW HILLS. PAT: YEP, I WAS WATCHING YOU LIVE ON CBS 2. YOU AND YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER MARVIN HELPED RESCUE DOZENS OF HORSES. REPORTER: YEAH, IT’S ENOUGH EXCITEMENT FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR. I DON’T NEED ANY MORE OF THAT. THANKFULLY THINGS ARE STARTING TO CALM DOWN OUTSIDE GIBSON RANCH, FIREFIGHTERS PACK UP. HILLSIDE STILL SMOLDERING, BUT THANKFULLY HAVE PUT THAT OUT AS WELL. IT WAS A MUCH DIFFERENT SCENE WHEN WE FIRST ARRIVED. I WANT TO SHOW YOU THAT VIDEO. THERE WAS THICK BLACK SMOKE AND FLAMES CLOSING IN ON THE RANCH INSIDE. ABOUT 50 HORSES STILL TIED UP WHO NEEDED TO BE RESCUED. THEY ASKED FOR HELP. MARVIN STONE, THE PHOTOGRAPHER, PUT DOWN HIS CAMERA. I AM A CITY GIRL, I HAVE NEVER RIDDEN A HORSE, BUT WE CAME IN TO VOLUNTEER. I TALKED TO ONE WOMAN WHOSE HORSE IS BOARDED HERE. WE’RE ALL DOING THIS TOGETHER. DESCRIBE HOW FAST THIS HAPPENED? THE FIRL WHO HELPS TAKE CARE OF MY HORSE CALLED AT KAISER IN PASADENA AND SAID GET DOWN HERE, AND WITHIN THE 45 MINUTES TO GET THROUGH WHATEVER TO GET HERE. THIS HAPPENED SO FAST AND TOOL IS JUST UNBELIEVABLE. IT’S JUST DEVASTATING. DIDN’T HAVE ANYBODY HERE TO HELP. I STARTED SCREAMING FOR PEOPLE TO COME IN AND YOU’RE ONE OF THEM. YOU TWO ARE GREAT. YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOURSELF FOR HELPING THE HORSES. REPORTER: EVERYBODY PUT DOWN WHAT THEY HAD AND FLAN THERE. I KNOW. I WAS SCREAMING TO PEOPLE DRIVING BY, COME IN HERE AND HELP US! REPORTER: SADLY, IT LOOKS LIKE MOST OF THE BARNES AND THE STABLES INSIDE HERE ARE A TOTAL LOSS. THAT FIRE JUST SWEPT THROUGH THIS RANCH SO QUICKLY BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS COULD EVEN ARRIVE. THE GOOD NEWS, NONE OF THE HORSES INJURED. NONE OF THEM HURT. THERE WERE CHICKENS AND BULLS, EVERYBODY GOT ALL OF THOSE OUT. THEY BROUGHT THE HORSES BACK IN BECAUSE THE AREA IS CLEAR FOR THE FIRE AND WAITING FOR THE TRAILERS TO MOVE IN AND MOVE THEM TO SAFETY. RICK: GREAT NEWS, AND KUDOS TO KRISTINE NEVER RIDDEN A HORSE BEFORE.

  1. My super-fabulous friend is the first lady being interviewed here. I am proud of her for helping get her horse and others out. She described what happened to me after and I am so glad everyone is OK. I hope the ranch is returned to it's former glory soon.
