How to Ride a Horse in the English Style : How to Transition a Horse from Halt to Walk English Style

October 28, 2019

Hi! I’m Kelli and on behalf of Expert Village,
I am going to show you some tips and techniques I use when performing transitions in the English
saddle riding. So the first transition we will do is moving from the halt into the walk.
So we are going to sit, we are going to make sure we have proper posture on our horse,
shoulders back, shoulders square, seat bones balanced nicely in the saddle, our heels are
down, we are looking where we want to go. We want to give her a little squeeze, a little
cluck and have her go forward. You don’t want to kick her too hard because that might cause
her to jolt forward. We just want her to be nice and relaxed. Nice and calm walking around,
whoa. So again, going from the halt into the walk we are going to sit nice and square,
look where we want to go and give her a little squeeze with our leg and have her move really
calmly and softly into the walk. We are not going to kick or squeeze too hard. We just
want her to be relaxed. We don’t want to cause her any undue stress by kicking her too hard,
thinking that she needs to go into a faster gait. So Just give a little squeeze and she
should move right into the walk. So that is how you want to move from the halt into the
walk.
