It’s horse racing for Te Arawa jockey Vinnie Colgan every Boxing Day

August 22, 2019

For over 150 years, Ellerslie’s Boxing Day races are an institution
on Auckland’s social calendar. And despite changeable
weather today, the crowds still flocked
to the event. Te Okiwa McLean spoke
to jockey Vinnie Colgan, and discovered while most of us
were feasting yesterday, the Te Arawa horseman was fasting in order to maintain optimum weight
for horse racing. It’s Ellerslie Boxing Day
Races today. Vinnie Colgan was only 16 when he first raced
at the Ellerslie Boxing Day Races. And since then he has snatched
the victory here six times. But maintaining the weight
is the main challenge as Christmas celebrations
took place yesterday. Although the weather isn’t
the best punters came out in force, masses still show their interests. 15,000 people have come today, all decked out fashionably,
in fashion. There are very low numbers
of Maori in this sport. And he wants the numbers
to increase. Colgan says he will return
to this race day every year and it will be his tradition
for many years to come, win or lose. Te Okiwa McLean, Te Karere.
