August 10, 2019

JOHN: THE DAY STARTED EARLY IN
BELGUIM. AROUND 5:00 A.M. HANDLERS MET
AND STARTED LOADING HORSES INTO
TRANSPORT CONTAINERS, THEN ONTO
A BOENG 777 CARGO PLANE. 69 HORSES IN ALL FOR SUNDAY’S
NINE HOUR FLIGHT ACROSS THE
ATLANTIC TO GSP.>>UP AT THE FRONT OF THE
AIRCRAFT THERE ARE SEATS WHERE
THE GROOMS CAN SIT. THEY GET ACCESS DURING THE
FLIGHT TO CHECK, TO FEED AND
WATER THE HORSES, AND MAKE SURE
THEY ARE COMFORTABLE. JOHN: TWO FLIGHTS HAVE COME IN
SO FAR. A TOTAL OF 10 ARE EXPECTED,
BRINGING IN 500 HORSES FOR THE
WORLD EQUESTRIAN GAMES TRYON,
STARTING SEPTEMBER 11.>>WE ARE DOING THIS FOR NEARLY
10 YEARS. WE STARTED WITH THE WORLD
EQUESTRIAN GAMES 2010, SO IT’S
ALWAYS A PLEASURE FOR US. JOHN: BUT THE AIRLIFT IS NEW FOR
GSP WORKERS WHO HAVE BEEN
PLANNING FOR THE PRECIOUS CARGO
FOR OVER A YEAR.>>WE’VE ACTUALLY SENT SOME OF
OUR STAFF TO SOUTH FLORIDA TO
OBSERVE SOME EQUINE CHARTER
OPERATIONS DOWN THERE AS WELL. THE TEAM IS FOCUSED ON MOVING
THE HORSES SAFELY, AND KEEPING
THE HORSES IN THE BEST HEALTH
AND SPIRITS FOR THE COMPETITION. JOHN: THE HORSES NEVER ACTUALLY
TOUCH THE GROUND AT THE AIRPORT.

THEY GO FROM CONTAINER RIGHT
INTO A TRANSPORT VEHICLE, AND
FROM HERE THE HORSES ARE
TRAILORED UP TO TRYON, ABOUT 45 MINUTES AWAY, IN A TRUCK CONVOY
WITH A POLICE ESCORT. JOHN LYON, WYFF NEWS 4, GS
