(TOM) DISAPPOINTING NEWS FOR LOCAL HORSE RIDERS AND OWNERS. THE STABLES NEAR N-A-S OCEANA IN VIRGINIA BEACH IS NO LONGER CATERING TO PRIVATELY OWNED HORSES. (ANITA) THE NAVY SAYS ITS ALL ABOUT COST SAVINGS, BUT THE MOVE IS GOING TO COST HORSE OWNERS A LOT. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S JASON MARKS IS NEAR THE MASTER JET BASE WITH THE DETAILS. JASON. (JASON) “WELL THIS WAS THIS WAS REALLY SHOCKING FOR HORSE OWNERS. YOU KNOW THEY GOT THE EMAIL FROM OCEANA YESTERDAY SAYING THEY HAD TO HAVE THEIR HORSES OUT OF THE STABLES BY FEBRUARY IT REALLY HAS THROWN THEM FOR A LOOP” (DON MICHALEK/HORSE OWNER) “YOU KNOW THIS IS DEVASTATING NEWS” THERE ARE MANY WHO BELIEVE CLOSE TO HORSE IS THERAPEUTIC. (DON MICHALEK/HORSE OWNER) “IT IS LIKE HAVING A SERVICE ANIMAL EXPECT I THEMSELVES GETTING TRAMPLED WITH STRESS. (DON MICHALEK/HORSE OWNER) “I’M GOING TO DO WHATEVER I CAN TO FIND A NEW HOME FOR MY TWO HORSES” DON MICHALEK’S HORSE RED AND MISTER BIG HAVE CALLED THE OCEANA STABLES HOME FOR MANY YEARS. YESTERDAY, MICHALEK GOT AN EMAIL LETTING HIM KNOW THAT ALL PRIVATELY OWNED HORSES NOW NEED TO BE OUT BY FEBRUARY. (DON MICHALEK/HORSE OWNER) “AT FIRST I WAS SHOCKED. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE. I WAS SHAKING” OCEANA HAS ALWAYS ALLOWED ACTIVE DUTY AND RETIRED MILITARY TO USE THE STABLES– BUT NEXT YEAR ONLY GOVERNMENT HORSES WILL BE ALLOWED TO GALLOP ON THE PROPERTY. (REGINA CARPENTER/HORSE OWNER) “WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO GO. CAN YOU AFFORD YOUR HORSES. ALL OF THOSE ARE QUESTIONS THAT ARE SWIRLING” REGINA CARPENTER IS ANOTHER HORSE OWNER WHO DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT. (REGINA CARPENTER/HORSE OWNER) “DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY THEY ARE DOING THIS? THAT WOULD BE NICE. THE INTERESTING THING WE WERE TOLD FOR MONTHS THEY WERE IMPROVING THE PROPERTY.” OCEANA OFFICIALS SAY IT COMES TO DOWN TO MONEY. THERE SIMPLY ISN’T ENOUGH TO PROVIDE THE LEVEL OF STABLE SERVICES THAT HORSE OWNERS DESERVE. (DON MICHALEK/HORSE OWNER) “THEY SAY THAT THREE MONTHS IS PLENTY OF TIME BUT NOT WHEN YOU’RE DUMPING 80 HORSES ONTO AN ALREADY FAIRLY SATURATED BOARDING MARKET” HORSE OWNERS SAY THEY FEEL IS THEY’RE ONES BEING TAKEN OUT TO PASTURE. (DON MICHALEK/HORSE OWNER) “AT FIRST THERE IS THERE IS SHOCK THAT THEY WERE DOING THIS AND THEN THERE IS ANGER THAT THEY ARE DOING THIS THEN THERE GRIEF WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NOW IT’S A DELIMMA THERE IS NO EASY ANSWER TO” (JASON MARKS) “SOME OF THE HORSE OWNERS TELL US THEY PLAN TO MOVE CLOSER TO THIER HORSES IF THEY CAN’T FIND SOMETHING IN VIRGINIA BEACH. WE DO KNOW THERE ARE SOME BARNS AROUND THE AREA WHO ARE TRYING TO HELP THOSE AFFECTED. THAT’S THE LATEST FROM OCEANA. JASON MARKS 10 ON YOUR SIDE.”
