North Dakota Horse Park makes a comeback to the racing scene

August 13, 2019

THERE WERE NO HORSES RACES AT THE NORTH DAKOTA HORSE PARK IN FARGO LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL ISSUES, BUT THE TRACK RE-OPENED TODAY TO A ROARING CROWD FOR ITS FIRST RACE OF THE 2016 SEASON. VALLEY NEWS TEAM’S NATALIE PARSONS EXPLAINS WHY RACE FANS ARE THRILLED THE HORSES MADE A GALLOPING COMEBACK. NOT A SINGLE HORSE TOOK THIS TRACK DURING THE 20-15 RACING SEASON…BUT THIS YEAR IS DIFFERENT. OVER 3500 RACE ENTHUSIASTS WATCHED TODAY’S SEASON OPENER. JESSE UNDERDAHL CAME TO THE NORTH DAKOTA HORSE PARK WITH HIS WIFE TO MEET UP WITH FRIENDS. “WE JUST GOT A BABYSITTER SO WE COULD COME AND ENJOY THE RACES.” HE SAYS HIS FAVORITE PART OF THE RACES IS PLACING HIS BETS. HE HASN’T WON ANYTHING YET BUT HE PLAYS IT SAFE. “I BET ABOUT $20 A RACE.” FOR HORSE ENTHUSIAST, SIARRA HANSON…SHE SAYS SHE’S BEEN COMING TO THE RACES WITH HER FAMILY FOR YEARS. “IT’S FUN TO WATCH AND IT’S SOMETHING TO DO SO THERE’S ALWAYS A REASON TO COME BACK.” THE NORTH DAKOTA HORSE PARK WAS CLOSED LAST SEASON FOR FINANCIAL REASONS, BUT WITH SOME CHANGES IT HAS REOPENED ITS DOORS ONCE AGAIN. “HORSE RACE NORTH DAKOTA HAS ALWAYS OPERATED THE MEETS. THE FACT IS THAT THERE WAS TWO PROPERTY OWNERS. THERE’S A NEW BOARD FOR THAT GROUP AND WE’VE BROUGHT THE TWO TOGETHER.” WHEN THE NORTH DAKOTA RACING COMMISSION DECIDED TO CANCEL LAST YEAR’S RACING, PARK OWNERS OWED NEARLY $1.82 MILLION DOLLARS IN TAXES TO THE CITY OF FARGO. SCHMITZ SAYS IT WASN’T THE TAXES THAT PUT A DAMPER ON THEIR 20-15 SEASON. “HORSE RACE NORTH DAKOTA HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TAXES AND ALL THAT. IT’S JUST BOTH OPERATIONS WITH THE COMMON GOAL.” SO THE FACILITY DOESN’T FALL ON HARD TIMES IN THE FUTURE, MANAGEMENT LOOKS TO UTILIZE OFF SEASON BUSINESSES TO HELP KEEP PEOPLE COMING BACK. “WORKING WITH INTERNET WAGING COMPANIES, GAMING, OTHER PARTNERS AND OTHER EVENTS.” IN FARGO, NATALIE PARSONS, VALLEY NEWS LIVE. RACES ARE ALSO RUNNING TOMORROW, AND THE NEXT TWO WEEKENDS IN JULY.
