Rare Suffolk Punch draft horses to demonstrate skills in Dublin

[Music] grazing in the pastures of Floyd County is a herd of draft horses they’re a smaller breed than the famous Clydesdales and rarer by far and earlier this week I got a crash course on the breed by the man who may be their greatest champion the supper course is different firstly because it’s so rare there are so very few up there are only 51 horses registered in North America last year they are the easiest horses to work with and if you’re going to work with them why not choose the horse that is most willing to to do things with you to say Jason Rutledge is a fan of the rare Suffolk Punch draft horse is an understatement sometimes when I go into certain situations where I’m new to people I come up to them and I reach my hand out and I say hi I’m Jason Rutledge I’m a Shopaholic Rutledge is well known in the region as a horse logger preferring horses over machinery as a method of manicuring local florists calling the worst trees to make room for the strong ones and no horse would do for him except the Suffolk Punch when most people think about workhorses they think of a Clydesdale which are much bigger something punch is a smaller breed of workforce but in some terms more honors five tales of show horse because it has a lot of action a Clydesdale in the Shire the two biggest draft breeds were originally developed for carrying knights in armor through a field of foot soldiers the supper course is very different than all the other draft breeds in that they were never used for the shoaling so they don’t have exaggerated motion and action they are built with a very short cannon bone so that when they raise their leg it’s not as high as the other breeds so they actually travel across the ground with less anatomical motion they’re built for efficiency not for flash and perhaps there is no better specimen of the way the breed moves then I the stallion that well does his part for Rutledge’s breeding program Rutledge explains the horses have to be stout to perform their duties he’s got lots of density in his bone so he can stand up to repeated efforts over and over and over without wearing out Rutledge who owns 16 Suffolk Punch horses likes to quote Winston Churchill who said there is something good about the outside of a horse for the inside of a man when you watch him with the horses when you see the joy he clearly feels as they head toward the woods you know at least when it comes to horses he and Churchill aren’t so very difficult they give me a sense of purpose they keep me present they keep me real and present to where I’m at they are honest so I’m a little bit lazy I don’t want a rodeo every time I go out to work with my horses I want the horses to want to see me to enjoy being with me and be willing to serve to promote the breed and show what these horses can do Rutledge has put together the North American Suffolk Punch spectacular on October 5th 6th and 7th at the New River Valley fairgrounds in Dublin it’ll be the largest show for Suffolk Punch horses in North America this year and maybe according to Rutledge ever all the information is with this story at WSL Escom

  1. For the most part many of us are absolutely clueless at all the animals farm animals that are becoming extinct. As important the knowledge of working with them is also becoming extinct as people are so far removed from relationships in the natural world. I'm glad to see Jason is promoting the Suffolk.

  2. Shires are way bigger than Clydesdales who grow only to 16.hh
Shires grow up to over 20 .hh and have much less white in their coloration., Clydesdales are much more upright as they have straighter shoulders
    Both are good strong workers
I do love the beautiful Suffolk’s though, a much older breed and not much feathering!

  3. There is a 14 year old Suffolk Punch at riding in the Clouds stable in Moultonborough, NH. She has an interesting gait, she's quite lively. A beautiful horse.
