The Duchess of York took to Twitter to praise her ex, who made his Trooping the Colour horse riding debut at today’s festivities  Sarah Ferguson posted three pictures of Prince Andrew on horseback with the caption: “Very proud of @TheDukeOfYork Colonel of the Grenadier Guards @Trooping @yorkiebea #eugenie” The pair separated in 1992 after six years of marriage and divorced in 1996, but the two have remained close since  Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, has been taking riding lessons to prepare for the ceremony in which 200 other horsemen took part  The duke, who has earned the nickname “Air Miles Andy” after his preferred method of transportation, was pictured last week trotting around the grounds of Windsor Castle ahead of the event in honour of the Queen’s birthday  A royal insider acknowledged that while Andrew had never particularly enjoyed riding, the prince had been out practicing on several occasions – including his birthday last month  The insider said: “He’s never really been keen on riding. He much prefers golf but now he has taken over Duke of Edinburgh’s responsibilities he will be appearing on horseback at this year’s Trooping the Colour ” Prince Andrew took on the role as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards in December after his father, Prince Philip, retired from public life  He rode out alongside Prince Charles, Colonel of the Welsh Guards, the Duke of Cambridge, who is Colonel of the Irish Guards and Princess Anne, who is Colonel of the Blues and Royals  The Duke of Edinburgh, who served as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards since 1975, previously rode on horseback at the annual parade alongside the Queen and other members of the Royal Family  Philip, who turns 97 on Sunday, was absent from today’s Trooping the Colour and the Queen travelled solo to the event which began at Buckingham Palace  The Duke of Edinburgh underwent a hip operation in April after which he spent more than a week recovering in hospital, but he has since been spotted in good spirits at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and more recently Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle  Trooping the Colour has taken place annually for more than 240 years to mark the British Sovereign’s birthday  The Queen celebrated her actual birthday on April 21 when she turned 92, but this second celebration is traditionally held on a Saturday in June to maximise the chances of good weather for the outdoor parade
