Study proposes transformation of Pimlico Race Course

August 12, 2019

$423 MILLION COME FROM TO DO IT? THE PRICE TAG IS HEFTY, $423.7
MILLION. THE RETURN COULD BE TREMENDOUS. DEMOLISHING THEM A QUOTE —
DEMOLISHING PIMLICO RACE COURSE
IN BUILDING A NEW ONE WITH
AMENITIES WOULD BRING IN MORE
THAN 800 MILLION DOLLARS IN
PUBLIC-PRIVATE INVESTMENTS ACCORDING TO MAYOR PUGH. RESIDENTS HAVE A MIXED REACTION.>>I LIVE AROUND HERE. I’M NOT A FAN. A LOT OF PEOPLE COME AROUND HERE
FOR PREAKNESS AND LEAVE THEIR
TRASH, FOR REAL.>>THEY COULD KEEP THE TRACK AND
BUILD ANOTHER GROCERY STORE FOR
THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. DAVID: THE COMPTROLLER SAYS THE
PRICE TAG WILL NOT BE ALL
GOVERNMENT SPENDING.>>THE STUDY SAYS WHY DON’T YOU
LOOK AT PUBLIC-PRIVATE
PARTICIPATION. I SEE THIS AS A COOPERATION. DAVID: THE AUTHORITY’S PLAN
CALLS FOR A PLAZA TO SERVE THE
COMMUNITY YEAR-ROUND. THE MENU WOULD INCLUDE CONCERTS,
FESTIVALS, AND OPEN AIR MARKETS. IT PROPOSES A CLUBHOUSE OPENED
51 WEEKS A YEAR. IT WOULD HOUSE SUMMER AND AFTER
SCHOOL PROJECTS. AMONG COWORKERS LIKE THAT IT
WOULD CREATE JOBS.>>FROM MY POSITION IT IS GOOD
BECAUSE THEY COULD CREATE MORE
JOBS. I AGREE WITH THAT. KAREN: THE GROUP THAT OWNS THE
MARCO AND LAUREL RELEASED A
STATEMENT SAYING THEY WANT
LAWYERS TO “NOT ONLY THE
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR A
MODERN STADIUM THAT CAN HOLD THE PREAKNESS STAKES, BUT HOW TO
BEST SUPPORT THE NEEDS OF THE
THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE
SUSTAINABLE YEAR-ROUND HORSE
RACING –”
THE PRICE TAG FOR A CAN SEE NO WAS $450 MILLION. THE 180 ACRE SITE WOULD HAVE
BEEN IMPORTED BY WASHINGTON
BOULEVARD AND I-95. THE STATE WOULD BUY THE LAND AND
PRIVATE DEVELOPERS WOULD BUILD. THAT PROPOSAL, PITCHED BY A THEN
REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR, DID NOT GO
ANYWHERE IN THE
DEMOCRATIC-CONTROLLED STATE
HOUSE. ALL INTERESTED PARTIES WILL GET
TOGETHER SOON TO DISCUSS STEPS. THE TIMETABLE IS FROM JUNE 2021
THROUGH MA

  1. As a horse racing fan from Maryland I know what they’re trying to do they’re going to tear down the track move the Preakness to Laurel Park say they ran out of money to build a new Pimlico and eventually someplace like Los Angeles will get the Preakness because Laurel is it big enough for it
