When A Man Saved A Horse From The Slaughterhouse, Her Response To Freedom Touched His Heart Deeply

August 18, 2019

Jamie Castano is no stranger to rescuing animals. However, when hehad saved one horse from almost
certain slaughter in 2017, it had a profound effect on him. That’s because the animal’s response to
her newfound freedom touched him deeply. Castano founded Freedom Farm Animal Rescue
in New Jersey in 2014. The creatures that the non-profit works with
have usually been rescued from a lifetime of neglect and abuse. Furthermore, lots of animals Castano and his
organization rescue come directly from slaughterhouses where their only fate is often death. Animal lover Castano first became dedicated
to saving livestock after rescuing a lamb named Clark in 2016. Around about the same time, he and his girlfriend
became vegan after becoming aware of the brutal reality of the meat and dairy industries. Sadly, little Clark died of an infection soon
after Castano rescued him from a dairy farm auction in Upstate New York. However, while their relationship may have
been short-lived, it had a lasting impact on Castano and his approach to animal rescue. In February 2018 Castano told to Peace 4 Animals,
“Even though I only knew him a few months, he made a life-changing impact on me.” He added, “We couldn’t contribute to more
Clarks.” As a result, Freedom Farm Animal Rescue turned
its intention to rescuing the victims of agriculture. With that in mind, as president of the organization,
Castano often took it upon himself to attend livestock auctions. At such events, Castano was able to identify
animals in need of Freedom Farm Animal Rescue’s help. However, they can be quite harrowing affairs
to witness. Describing some of the scenes he’d witnessed
at auctions, in 2017 Castano told The Dodo, “You stand there in a warehouse, and…
you see that there are thousands that are going to be killed today, and it almost makes
you feel like, ‘What are you doing?’” But attending such events was a necessary
evil in Castano’s fight against animal cruelty. Even if he could save just one individual
from a life of suffering and misery, such visits felt worth it – no matter how heartbreaking
they might have been. So in summer 2017 Castano and some of his
fellow animal rescuers went to a livestock auction house in the hope of capturing footage
and photographs inside. On that occasion, they didn’t intend to
rescue any animals. However, it seemed that the fates had other
plans. As Castano looked around the warehouse, something
caught his eye. It was a horse with the number “25” branded
on her neck. Straight away Castano had to investigate,
since the figure had a special significance to him. Castano explained to The Dodo, “I actually
have the number 25 tattooed on my arm as a memorial for my uncle who had passed away.” Consequently, the coincidence was too strange
to ignore. “So when I happened to see her, I was like,
‘Oh my god,’” he added. The horse in question was in a “direct ship”
pen, which meant she would be dispatched to slaughter after the auction. And to make matters worse, it didn’t appear
that the animal had enjoyed a nice life to begin with. That’s because, according to Castano, she
had “pin firing marks” on her legs. Revealing the possible cause of the holes,
Castano explained to The Dodo, “They give them to racehorses. It’s pretty much like a shot of acid to
freeze the tendon or muscle. So when they have an injury or they’re not
performing their best, this is supposed to make them not feel that area. My vet had said, ‘Maybe four or five pin
firing marks is almost normal,’ but she had 18 on each leg.” The horse’s plight touched Castano so much
that he decided to fundraise to buy her freedom. Thankfully, some kind animal lovers donated
to the cause, and soon the equine was on her way to the Freedom Farm Animal Rescue sanctuary
with Castano. Her rescuers named the horse Joanie, and it
didn’t take long for her to show them just how grateful she was for a second shot at
life. In fact, as soon as Joanie arrived at her
new home, she shimmied all across the floor in happiness. Recalling what he witnessed during Joanie’s
first taste of freedom, Castano said to The Dodo, “We backed up the trailer to her quarantine
field, and as soon as we let her out — we didn’t even taken the stickers off her butt
yet — she walked right out and started rolling.” Castano later discovered it was likely that
the horse had been born in Illinois in 1999. After retiring from a successful stint as
a racehorse, she was sold off to become an Amish buggy horse, before winding up at the
livestock auction house where Castano had found her. So after a whole lifetime of toil and torture,
Joanie finally found a safe haven at Freedom Farm Animal Rescue. However, it would take her some time for all
her scars to heal – particularly when it came to trusting humans once more. Castano revealed to The Dodo, “At the auction,
when we first walked up to her, I said, ‘Wow, she’s beautiful.’ I put my hand out to pet her and she flinched
and threw her head like she was terrified of me.” He added, “But now she’s been in quarantine
for three weeks, you can walk up to feed her, she runs up to the gate and she’s all in
your face. She definitely knows she’s no longer on
her way to slaughter.” Soon, thanks to Freedom Farm Animal Rescue,
Joanie had completely transformed from the terrified horse that was not long for this
world. “She’s just an absolute sweetheart,”
Castano enthused to The Dodo. “If we’re in her field, she’ll follow
us all around. To go from a horse that was on her way to
a slaughterhouse to following us around the pasture — that’s incredible.”

  1. There is a reason why the term horse Sense exists. As far as her reaction goes, if you just won the lottery, wouldn't you be happy?!

  2. I wish men will eat less meat to save slaughter of animals.. It makes me feel so sad to know that animals knows if they will be kill. I thought no they don't know

  3. Thank you for saving an innocent, yet so beautiful & majestic creatures life from a vicious death. May you be blessed in every way.

  4. Beautiful horse and beautiful people who rescued her …making a difference in a world where so many humans are arrogant and really have no intelligence or understanding about the amazing creatures we are supposed to share our world with. Cruelty is Never acceptable !

  5. I hate to see any kind of animals suffer from a painful feelings. I think the ones that needs to be slaughtered are them for having to have horses be "put down" for whatever reason. Horses have feelings and they love back. Slaughtering animals needs to be STOPPED. It needs to be BANNED. The government needs to step in and help. It is wrong to put down any animals that are innocent. Petitions can be used to save animals from any dangers ahead of them all. I'd like to add my comment to the rescuers and for saving the precious horse to safety so that the baby horse can have a life with the mom and enjoy the NEW life. Also adding my hat off solute and my respects to the rescuers for saving the precious horse to safety and thank you much much much. Gracias YOU and others are the savior for the precious horse and for her baby for a chance to call "a beautiful life" for them. Thank you alot for caring and loving. 6. That's how we got Montanan. We changed his name 2 Tanner. Her was caught in Nevada. ( mustang) The 1st thing they did 2 him was proud cut him. (Gielded him W/OUT any anesthetic). They then "started" beating him in2 submission. He was sold 2x. With a 3 strike; he on his way back 2 slaughter he was given 2 us right b4 the truck came. We brought him ๐Ÿก. He was just like the white ๐ŸŽ in this video. He's now a very good ๐ŸŽbut if u do something incorrectly he'll let u know immediately. U can take the ๐Ÿดfrom the wild but u'll NEVER b able 2 take the wild from the ๐Ÿด. He'll never leave us..

  9. God Bless this couple for changing their lives for the animals. I became vegetarian because of factory farming.
Animals are not treated as they deserve.

  10. Tens of thousand AMERICAN horsesย  die a barbaric, savage death in slaughter houses in Canada and Mexico. There is a huge industry in the USA of the most vile sub humans that walk this earth who transport horses across the borders daily.ย  This is 100% legal.ย  All types of horses are shipped together.ย  TBs, large work horses, old, young, injured, pregnant, ill.ย  And people still breed and still give kids horses for a Christmas gift.ย  Horses have been a friend, ally, worker and warrior for mankind and this is how we thank them.

  11. I LOVE THIS STORY! Thank you for making me smile and cry happy tears!
Im so tired of getting videos on my phone that are so unbelievably heartbreaking. I dont want to see videos that are so sad I cry because I cant imagine how or why someone could do some of the things to animals that are on the videos…
This video gave me hope again…that there are still people out there that love animals as much as I do..ALL ANIMALS.
I think I will subscribe to your channel…see what else you have for loving animal stories…THANK YOU FOR ENDING MY DAY WITH A SMILE AND HAPPY TEARS GOING DOWN MY CHEEK..๐Ÿพ

  12. First of all… I applaud people like this, that dedicate their lives to bettering the life of abused animals and animals that have suffered a life of deprivation.
I could never be a vegan or a vegetarian. I do eat a great deal less meat then many people do. My approaches that every animal should have a good life while they live and treated well. They should have the freedom space, proper food, sunlight, warmth of the other mother, and compaction for the quality of their life. The slaughtering, must be as human as possible, and, here is the most difficult part for a we in the United States to do… this is what makes me upset and angry. WE need to eat all the animals. We must not waste one bit of this animals life that was sacrificed to give us life. That means eating everything, not turning our dogs up to the lung, intestines, bone marrow, tendon, stomach…. you have the idea. When I see ads for hotdogs, and they say that we do not add these things to our hotdogs, I think to myself, why not? It is good food, and a hotdog is ideal place to put them.
To take a life is very serious, and therefore to honor that life everything must be used. We need to be grateful, and thankful, and when we say grace, also thank the animals that we are consuming.

  13. The Amish do not think about horses, dogs and cats like we do. They are livestock like everything else 200 years ago. Wonder what theyโ€™d done to poor Joanie that had her off to slaughter? Canada and Mexico still slaughter, that needs to stop. The Amish are in the puppy mill business too.

  14. Literally NOTHING makes me angrier than CRUELTY of ANY kind!!! I understand NOT everyone can go vegan…but WHY must animals b SO FUCKING mistreated before slaughtering? WTF!!!??? ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

  15. May God bless the Castano family for their loving and generous adoption of Joanie,. I think your uncle had a hand in this rescue and that he and St.Francis are smiling down on you and yours. That coincidental number 25 wasn't so coincidental after all.Good luck to you all!

  16. What a terrible species humans are. Bless these people for their kindness . Blessings for a wonderful life.

  17. GOD BLESS YOU YOUN MAN.BIG HUGS FROM ME OOOOOOOOOOOOO (my mother sent O for a hug when she wrote tom)

  18. I'm not vegan or anything, but I absolutely hate the racing industry. Not only because of what other people have told me, but from my own experience as well. I've owned half a dozen x racehorses before and although when I got them they were "sound", every one of them had both physical and mental problems that showed within months. 3 of them couldn't be ridden by the time I'd had them for a year. I'm not trying to say that all people involved in the racing industry are cruel, but people need more awareness of how bad it is.

  19. I know how old horses are treated. My pony Daniel was sold to me because his owners son was frightened of him. He was I was told 8 years old then. In fact the vet told me he was more like 10 years old and someone had rasped his teeth down making him look younger. The vet told heโ€™d probably been a stallion for a while, term being entire in horsy speak. He had a beautiful thick neck with the stallion crest and a very mischievous nature when ridden to match. To handle he was a real gem. And really intelligent, he never got me into trouble when out, in fact quite the opposite, if I got him into problems heโ€™d snort at me disapprovingly and get me out of trouble using his his own vast experience of human frailties. He even saved my life a couple of times. Daniel was about twenty when I had to put him to sleep. It absolutely devastated me and 30 years later Im still missing him terribly. He was my part Highland part Exmoore 13.2 pony. Filled with fun and loving nature. You just needed to realise he meant no harm, he just loved play. I promised never to sell him and wild horses would never ever have parted us. Only old age and illness forced his path to rest. I used to say Iโ€™d been grounded when he was ill. When he died, I suffered a serious relapse and found out I had MS. Daniel saved my life and still is a good friend he is always cropping up in my life even now. The former owner of our house had a horse called Daniel too h3 was highland. Horses are amazing. I know Daniel knew I wasnโ€™t well before I did. We looked after each other.

  20. Some people are just Angels on earth. You are just 2 of them . Respect for all you do. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

  21. It disgusts me how animals of all species are killed because they are not wanted yet breeding is running rife.

  22. Uh i hate it when people say that meat farming is awgull and this is what is putting farmers out of buisness and this might be happening in America but it isnt in england i promise because im a young farmer and this doesnt happen i have been brought up to not support this stuff especialy people being vegan and vegitarian

  23. she's so cute I'm glad I am a horse crazy girl and It makes me so happy to see horses being treated well.

  24. That is a brave thing he did saving that horse. I think animals know whoโ€™s good and whoโ€™s bad. Theyโ€™re usually pretty grateful to get a better life.

  25. Poor babies. It makes me sick to think of some of the cruelty some animals have gone through. I will never understand how people can do it. Animals are soo amazing. They have no defense. I think people who can be cruel to animals, will be the same to children, their defenseless. People who harm children are the lowest form of life . Sickening.

  26. Armish are cruel to animals, work them to death and then have no problems sending them to slaughter! Have seen them breed dogs in the most horrendous conditions, all for greed! Not nice people when they abuse animals!!! Some religion that is!!!!!

  27. Thank you beautiful human beings, you are the really heros,God Bless You,I have so much respect towards you.

  28. Thank you so much for being a caring person and caring for the animals that other people discard thank you from the bottom of my heart

  29. Iโ€™m sorry but how can you slaughter a horse? In fact, how you you slaughter any animal for no reason? Terrible.

  30. Standardbreds (harness race horses) make GREAT riding horses/pets! They are so tame. I've worked with them over 10 years. Some Amish are cruel to the horses, that's why they are afraid! THEY ARE GREAT HORSES!

  31. Watching this Young Horse Enjoy his New Found Freedom and Joy was Wonderful …seeing his Spirit had Not been Broken from hIs Aniden

  32. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธJonieโœ๏ธ๐Ÿ™โ˜ฎ๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ she is the baby girl โค๏ธโค๏ธ

  33. Bless your heart for saving these animals ! ๐Ÿด ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‡๐Ÿ„

  34. If only all humans could feel the way u all did for innocent animals. Johnny got a life . I feel sorry for the animals that being tortured n killed behind our backs . Some humans do it for pleasure n trophy hunters , poaching for money etc etc . I just wish we all could stop all these killings of innocent animals. Say no to poaching hunting.

  35. There's good evil people, evil satanics eat anything, beautiful horses especially, me, wouldn't eat anything that cries, never, ever, like eating my mamma๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ข

  36. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญโค๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝโค๏ธ Thank God

  37. The horse ๐Ÿด is really lucky. How many horses, buffaloes, cows, goats, camels, sheeps are regularly slaughtered

  38. I rescued a 3 week old kitten my tractor driver accidentally killed his mom and the litter. So spent long nights bottle feeding him at someti 2 in the morning. Thank goodness I had my Dog Sasha who helped me as she was in a false pregnancy. I'm glad I still have Dave and Sasha. They are my little miracle ๐Ÿ’œ

  39. Wow, that horse was definitely mean for Castano. He has a 25 tattoo & the horse had a 25 brand. So glad you two were meant for each other. Never heard of "firing pins" before. It's disgusting. Poor horses.

  40. I saved a few horses from going to be slaughtered and I still have them I keep them well into old age but unfortunately they do and will die of old age I donโ€™t asked them to do anything they are in a big green paddock running around just being themselves

  41. Horses are not machines to be discarded. Euthanize, donโ€™t send to auction where they end up in the slaughter system. They are emotional and affectionate animals, highly intelligent and emotional. Slaughter is just wrong.
And stop breeding so many. Too many horses pregnant with foals at their sides end up in the system. This shows a broken moral compass.

  42. I might have liked the video more if the guy had his facts correct. His description of pin firing is completely wrong. That is not how it is done or what the result is. Also, if she is in fact a former race horse then the line "it is likely she was born in Ohio" tells me that someone hasn't done their research. All Thoroughbreds that have raced have a tattoo on the inside of their upper lip that identifies them. It gives the year of their foaling and their registration number. Wrong and/or misleading information is why I hate videos like this.
