Woman injured in barrel racing at Sarpy County Fair

August 12, 2019

>>COME ON, EVA. CHINH: MARCI BARTLETT WAS THE
FIRST ONE OUT OF THE GATE AT THE
SARPY COUNTY FAIR FRIDAY NIGHT. IT WAS A GREAT RUN FOR THE
BARREL RACER UNTIL THE END.>>I HIT SOME HARD DIRT AND THE
HORSE SLIPPED COMPLETELY DOWN
AND FELL AND JUST KIND OF PUSHED
ME RIGHT DOWN TO THE GROUND. CHINH: THE 66-YEAR-OLD IS
RECOVERING FROM A CONCUSSION
A COLLAPSED LUNG, EIGHT BROKEN
RIBS, A BROKEN CLAVICLE, A SMA
VERTEBRAE CRACK, AND LOTS OF
BUMPS AND BRUISES.>>I’M PRETTY LUCKY. I COULD HAVE GOTTEN A LOT WORSE. CHINH: SHE SAYS HER HORSE, EVA,
DOES NOT HAVE ANY INJURIES. WHEN I ASKED WHETHER SHE THINKS
FAIR OFFICIALS OR GROUNDS CREWS
COULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING TO
PREVENT THIS —
>>NO, NOT NECESSARILY. IT’S TRIAL AND ERROR. AND I THINK THEY WERE VERY HARD
— WORK VERY HARD TO TRY TO MAKE
IT GOOD GROUND. THEY PROBABLY LEARNED FROM THIS
EVENT THAT THEY NEED TO GO A
LITTLE DEEPER. CHINH: IT’S ALSO A TOUGH
REMINDER FOR OTHER BARREL
RACERS, LIKE BECCA FELLMAN
SHE’S A FAMILY FRIEND AND
COMPETED AFTER BARTLETT THE SAME
NIGHT.>>IT’S SCARY TO WATCH THAT
BECAUSE WE ALL DO IT AND IT CAN
HAPPEN TO ANY OF US AT ANY TIM
AND THE SAME THING HORSES GET
HURT DOING THIS.>>MARCI BARTLETT IS NEXT. CHINH: AS FOR BARTLETT AND EVA,
THEY TIED FOR SECOND PLACE WITH
15.72 SECONDS AND EARNED 600
DOLLAR
BARTLETT HOPES TO COMPETE IN
ABOUT THREE MONTHS OR WHENEVER HER DOCTOR SAYS IT’S OK.>>AND IF YOU LOVE THE SPORT AND
YOU ARE CAREFUL AND YOU MAKE
SURE YOU’RE PREPARED, THAT THIS
IS SOMETHING YOU CAN CONTINUE TO
DO. CHINH: YOU MAY RECALL ONE YE
AGO, OMAHA FIREFIGHTER TOM
BARTEK WAS CRITICALLY HURT WHILE
RIDING A BUL
A BULL FOR CHARITY. SARPY COUNTY FAIR PRESIDENT RICH
JANSEN TELLS ME SAFETY IS ALWAYS
PRIORITY AND PARTICIPANTS ARE
WARNED ABOUT THE RISKS.
